Homeless advocacy is what I do. I help solve problems.

After a long period of being unemployed and unhoused, I have first-hand experience navigating the system. I have learned things that have helped me become employed and housed here in Chico. I still have work to do on myself, but I feel I could be of help and a resource to others who are now in the same boat.

I have experienced many of the same situations that homeless people in Chico have experienced or are experiencing. Along the way, I have made many connections, both professionally and personally, throughout Chico’s homeless ecosystem. I have also become familiar with most, if not all, of the organizations in Chico that provide services or assistance to lower-income and homeless community members.

I have always been a problem solver. My background in computers, electronics, networking, and fixing things has taught me to look at a problem, figure out what is actually going on, and work toward a solution.

I especially enjoy working on old things … the older the better, I say. I enjoy the puzzle … the problem solving … the enigma. I consider myself sort of an enigmatologist … someone who enjoys figuring things out.

I believe those same skills can be useful when helping people. Sometimes a situation just seems overwhelming and you don’t know where to start. Maybe I can help find a way forward, make a connection, or simply help get something done.

I’m not judgmental, and I don’t expect anything in return. I care about people, and I believe generosity and compassion should be unconditional. I don’t need accolades or pats on the back … knowing that I helped is enough. If someday you are able to help someone else, pay it forward.

I’m not an influencer, media creator, content guru, or someone looking for hits or followers. I’m just someone who is in it and wants to help where, when, and how I can.

Maybe you need your bike worked on, a brake light fixed, a loose stair repaired, a form filled out, something printed, or help with something else that has become overwhelming.

If I can help, I’ll help.

If I can’t help, I’ll tell you.

If I can’t do it, I’ll tell you that too.

I won’t make a promise I can’t keep. I’m a straight-shooting arrow.

Building Connections

I’d like to make connections with local providers, case workers, counselors, and other professionals working directly with people experiencing homelessness. I’d like to make them aware of my presence and the things I may be able to offer.

I’d also like to build relationships and cooperation with other organizations working toward the same goals.

I am willing to volunteer directly with organizations that are doing this work, such as Safe Space Chico and the North State Shelter Team.

I’m not looking to step on anyone’s toes or replace the services that already exist. I’d like to become another resource … someone who can help fill gaps, make connections, solve problems, and help people navigate what can sometimes be an overwhelming system.
